Wassup after 3 weeks!

Took a 3 weeks hiatus from blogging. Not that the last 3 weeeks were uneventful, its just either having no inspirations or inkling to write. Anyhow, the 'feeling' to blog returned and here I am to make my updates, despite having an assignment to clear by tmr! :)

Had my 1 week break 2 weeks ago, and it sure felt like it was a month when that happened! Life in Singapore is as such. Resting/play/fun times always flash by without us realising, but working moments seem to last forever! Bleah!!! During this break, I grabbed the chance to date my grandpa. Its a long overdue date given he had to go through his radiation treatment last year. Now that he's on the road to recovery, I think there's no better time than now to just hang out with Grandpa George. This was what we did:

1) Luncheon @ People's Park Complex - Hongkong style steamed fish head. A dish he has been craving for the longest time ever.

See how happy Grandpop Georgie looked???

2) Outing to Jurong Bird Park. Marred by the irritating downpour barely 10mins after we stepped foot into the park. A dampener but when the weather cleared (after almost an hour later), we just made the best of whatever time we had left to catch some of the shows & sights. A pity there wasn't much to see. Thanks but no thanks to the rain.

At the end of it, my grandpa said : " Well we won't be coming back again in the next 10 years!. The zoo is much better" That says it all about Jurong Bird Park.

The outing was very ordinary but special nonetheless because its the first one my grandpa had in a long long while. We used to go out more for free lunch time concerts at the Esplanade on Tuesdays (when I was in Uni) but such hang-out times became considerably less when I started work. I knew grandpop was very happy though tired (he missed his afternoon nap!) when his SMS, which said : "Our next outing would be to eat fish-head at Smith Street and maybe catch a show", came. It sure brought a wide smile to my face.

In the same week, I had my class outing to Pasir Ris Prawn & Fish farm which was as ulu as NIE. Never knew there was such an area in Pasir Ris! Well, the outing saw some of the usual onz people with a few 'newcomers'.

The catch this time round was disgustingly disappointing as compared to the last prawning session at Bishan last year. The 10 of us caught like only 5-6 prawnies in 4hrs! This uncle, on the other hand, had prawns after prawns every 5-10mins. He alone had a bigger harvest than all of us combined. The prawns sure know how to choose!

Pathetic catch! The joke of the day!

Giant raindrops graced the outing too. For almost 2 hrs. But as I always believed, its the people who make the experience memorable and no exception this time. To round up our outing, we had a sumptuous feast at Sepang Bedok Market. Too bad I didn't take any pictures but till today I can still remember how packed our table was! PE teachers are unbelievably greedy and unhealthy in our choice of food (sometimes). The dinner sure compensated for our lousy catch.

Wo(Man) of the hour

As I read the tribute to the late Dr Goh Keng Swee, I can't help but feel this profoundly deep admiration for this immensely brilliant forefather of Singapore. I was in awe of his contributions and how his influence is so pervasive in modern Singapore, yet so few actually heard and know of his legacy. The more I read on about what people remembered of him and his long list of accolades, the more proud I am to be a Singaporean. I never knew places of interests like our zoo, bird park and even Sentosa were his ideas! These are just a tiny fraction of his contributions. My gosh....it was just an incredible discovery and I was hooked to the Saturday's Special edition on 'Remember Dr Goh Keng Swee'. Strangely, my heart was pounding as I read and later reflected on this titan's life. Instinctively, a question came to mind i.e. will there be another titan like Dr Goh, Mr Lee KY, Mr Wee Kim Wee or the other members of the Old Guard in my generation? Will I get to see one em...

Day 3 & 4 - Halong Bay

HALONG BAY Cat Ba Island (2 days, 1 night) After 1 day of exploration of Hanoi city, we headed for Halong Bay via the junkboat. Our destination was on Cat Ba Island where we stayed for the night. It was also there that we ventured onto 'Monkey' Island - not to be deceived; there was only 4 monkeys sighted. The exhilirating part of this journey was the motorbike ride to the ferry terminal to board the boat to 'Monkey' Island. Felt like I was part of a short scene of a James Bond movie (pillion with Pierce Brosnan!). Will never forget the cold draft blowing against my face and just riding up and down the slopes! Cat Ba Island is a very quiet & tranquail place. Little activity especially at night. Wanted to catch the morning activities at the fishing wharf opposite our hotel but could not wake up in time. Nonetheless, managed to capture some snippets of what goes on at the bay. Waiting patiently to board the boat. Snapped this on board the boat. Not a vietnamese but fe...
