Day 8 - Hoi An

This tranquail town invites you to take a walk back in time. The surroundings just spell nostalgia and I wonder if Singapore was like that in the early days. Well, as with many hot tourist spots, Hoi An will definitely undergo many changes to continually draw tourists to it. But I do hope that its natural alluring beauty will not diminished with the burgeoning development that is and will be happening in this town. I want to return to explore this town further and hopefully its before its outlook changes.

Busy window shopping that I didn't take much pictures of the various tailor shops!

But I love the shophouses. Got character.

Initially, Hoi An to me was just the place where I will be getting myself the traditional Vietnamese costume (which I did) but very soon, it became more than just that. As I scoured the streets, which was filled with numerous tailor shops, custom-made shoes/bags shops and art-and-craft stalls, I realised that Hoi An is so so rich in her arts and craft heritage. Be it the shoes, clothes or carvings, all were beautifully and intricately designed and handmade. And what is most amazing is that they can produce the custom-made goods in just a few hours, regardless of the number of orders made. This is really skill at its best!

Day Scene

The shop which we patronized to custom made our clothes had like 20 orders made that night and we were leaving Hoi An the next afternoon. We wondered if they could really finish them in time and they did. I was impressed with my traditional suit! Sweet!
What was also memorable was that we managed to hit it off well with the family who took our orders. In 1 night, we became fast friends but its a pity our stay is shortlived. Nonetheless, Hoi An has left beautiful memories for me to keep for a long time.

Looking resplendent in our outfits. This group of tourists stopped to take pictures with us!

The lady, Ngyuen, who made it possible for us to look our best! And her family as well :)

Wo(Man) of the hour

As I read the tribute to the late Dr Goh Keng Swee, I can't help but feel this profoundly deep admiration for this immensely brilliant forefather of Singapore. I was in awe of his contributions and how his influence is so pervasive in modern Singapore, yet so few actually heard and know of his legacy. The more I read on about what people remembered of him and his long list of accolades, the more proud I am to be a Singaporean. I never knew places of interests like our zoo, bird park and even Sentosa were his ideas! These are just a tiny fraction of his contributions. My gosh....it was just an incredible discovery and I was hooked to the Saturday's Special edition on 'Remember Dr Goh Keng Swee'. Strangely, my heart was pounding as I read and later reflected on this titan's life. Instinctively, a question came to mind i.e. will there be another titan like Dr Goh, Mr Lee KY, Mr Wee Kim Wee or the other members of the Old Guard in my generation? Will I get to see one em...

Day 3 & 4 - Halong Bay

HALONG BAY Cat Ba Island (2 days, 1 night) After 1 day of exploration of Hanoi city, we headed for Halong Bay via the junkboat. Our destination was on Cat Ba Island where we stayed for the night. It was also there that we ventured onto 'Monkey' Island - not to be deceived; there was only 4 monkeys sighted. The exhilirating part of this journey was the motorbike ride to the ferry terminal to board the boat to 'Monkey' Island. Felt like I was part of a short scene of a James Bond movie (pillion with Pierce Brosnan!). Will never forget the cold draft blowing against my face and just riding up and down the slopes! Cat Ba Island is a very quiet & tranquail place. Little activity especially at night. Wanted to catch the morning activities at the fishing wharf opposite our hotel but could not wake up in time. Nonetheless, managed to capture some snippets of what goes on at the bay. Waiting patiently to board the boat. Snapped this on board the boat. Not a vietnamese but fe...
