A different CNY

True enough, this year's CNY is different from previous years.

We didn't go to our eldest granduncle's place as we always did because he has passed on and his family not quite keen on celebrating also. Hence our usual Tan clan's dinner will be at a later date (31 Jan- Sat).
Not much visiting but it was a refreshing change in the way we celebrate Day 1 of CNY.

Went back to our old estate to visit our ex-neighbours. As usual, we were told that "我们都长大了". Its true. Uncle & Auntie still remembered how small and kiddy we were and not having seen us for a while, the change is stark. Its good to see that they are still the same - hospitable, friendly and treating us as their own. I met their grand-daughter who is just so adorable! Very intelligent kid who has a flare for photography! She is quite tech-savvy for her age (2 yrs plus); able to use her parents' handphones as though she has been having one for years!

With the little darling who made my day!

For the rest of the afternoon, my family spend our time paying respects to my granduncles & aunties who have passed on. It was the 1st time we went together and it was quite a cool feeling. We were trying to figure out who was buried where and we just walked based on our instincts! Ha...

We later went to Mandai Colombarium to 'visit' my eldest granduncle whom my grandfather holds in high esteem. From the confidence my grandpa showed in telling us where the urn was placed and how he was the 1st to alight and walked ahead of us showed me how much he respected his brother-in-law. I believe its because of him that my grandpa actually made the trip with us today to pay our respects. No doubt my granduncle is a person of great influence. He was respected by all of us; both young & old.

Dinner was spent at Northpoint, Xin Wang Hk Cafe after much indecisiveness.
A cosy get-together with simple fare of dim sum, wanton mee, mango dessert etc.

Took the chance to also capture my loved ones in their simple moments.

Though much quieter than before but it was still a fruitful day. More quality time spent with family and I suppose that's all that matters.

To sum up today, it was basically a CNY with little fuss but loaded with lots of memories and significance. There's value in simplicity and bliss as well.

Wo(Man) of the hour

As I read the tribute to the late Dr Goh Keng Swee, I can't help but feel this profoundly deep admiration for this immensely brilliant forefather of Singapore. I was in awe of his contributions and how his influence is so pervasive in modern Singapore, yet so few actually heard and know of his legacy. The more I read on about what people remembered of him and his long list of accolades, the more proud I am to be a Singaporean. I never knew places of interests like our zoo, bird park and even Sentosa were his ideas! These are just a tiny fraction of his contributions. My gosh....it was just an incredible discovery and I was hooked to the Saturday's Special edition on 'Remember Dr Goh Keng Swee'. Strangely, my heart was pounding as I read and later reflected on this titan's life. Instinctively, a question came to mind i.e. will there be another titan like Dr Goh, Mr Lee KY, Mr Wee Kim Wee or the other members of the Old Guard in my generation? Will I get to see one em...

Day 3 & 4 - Halong Bay

HALONG BAY Cat Ba Island (2 days, 1 night) After 1 day of exploration of Hanoi city, we headed for Halong Bay via the junkboat. Our destination was on Cat Ba Island where we stayed for the night. It was also there that we ventured onto 'Monkey' Island - not to be deceived; there was only 4 monkeys sighted. The exhilirating part of this journey was the motorbike ride to the ferry terminal to board the boat to 'Monkey' Island. Felt like I was part of a short scene of a James Bond movie (pillion with Pierce Brosnan!). Will never forget the cold draft blowing against my face and just riding up and down the slopes! Cat Ba Island is a very quiet & tranquail place. Little activity especially at night. Wanted to catch the morning activities at the fishing wharf opposite our hotel but could not wake up in time. Nonetheless, managed to capture some snippets of what goes on at the bay. Waiting patiently to board the boat. Snapped this on board the boat. Not a vietnamese but fe...
