Gastronomical Cravings

I actually put in like 3 entries today! So fruitful! But before I rest for the night, I must make mention about this special segment of the trip. Personally, it was just incredibly amazing! For some strange reasons, I started to have cravings after cravings. Very random in fact. It started when I was returning from Halong Bay. I just commented that I wanted to eat rosti and turkey with cranberry sauce! And guess what!? Immediately after lunch, we spotted this lady frying some tempura look-alike stuff and to my pleasant surprise, there was this tapioca rosti! Just imagine my amazement! Jeff and Eileen remembered what I said on the boat and they too were so shocked that it actually happened! Haha...when I get my hands on the picture, I will add it into this entry..for sure!

My rosti!

That was not the end of it. As the days went by, I had more cravings. Let me now list them down...

1. Soyabean curd

2. Tiramisu

3. Roast duck (not exactly what I wanted but to be able to taste duck was good enough. and this was in orange sauce. unique in itself)

4. Burger (had this hotdog bun for less than $1 and it was breakkie on the tuk tuk in phnom penh!)

5. Crepes / Pancakes with mangoes and banana

6. Dragonfruit (Vietnamese ones)

7. Subway sandwich - the vietnamese edition! Had different kinds of meat and fried egg with pickled cucumbers and chilli! The baguette was lovely; toasted and crisp on the outside and soft inside!

8. Donuts

Tiramisu actually topped the list of my cravings and I was on a mission to hunt down the best tasting one. Had one in Hoi An but not quite what I expected. But was still happy to have been able to find it. When I reached Siem Reap, I finally got to taste the actual authentic tiramisu and I was just estatic. Simply grinning from ear to ear.

The 'cheong' version of tiramisu. Tasted more like ice-cream cake!

When I had the REAL stuff! I was on cloud 999999999999!!!

My tau huey came in the form of the liquid version. Different it may be but when I saw the cart selling tau huey drink, I was so excited!!!!! Of course I went ahead to buy a packet to drink! Similarly for the dragonfruit, I was too lazy to buy one then peel and eat it as it would be too messy. However, I got to try dragonfruit shake and man...it was one of the most refreshing drink I've ever had.

Saw a few roasted ducks but didn't get to eat them. Anyhow, just being to encounter it was quite enough! No crepes but I sure had my share of lovely pancakes with generous servings of banana!

Apparently, I was the only one in the team who consistently had strange cravings but what was really bizzare is I actually get to eat or spot them when I least expect it. It made my trip so much more memorable and exciting. It was as though I was doing a mini makan sutra around Vietnam and Cambodia. Foodie I am and I'm proud to be one! Later, a few of them began to develop cravings as well! I suppose I was quite influential!

Wo(Man) of the hour

As I read the tribute to the late Dr Goh Keng Swee, I can't help but feel this profoundly deep admiration for this immensely brilliant forefather of Singapore. I was in awe of his contributions and how his influence is so pervasive in modern Singapore, yet so few actually heard and know of his legacy. The more I read on about what people remembered of him and his long list of accolades, the more proud I am to be a Singaporean. I never knew places of interests like our zoo, bird park and even Sentosa were his ideas! These are just a tiny fraction of his contributions. My gosh....it was just an incredible discovery and I was hooked to the Saturday's Special edition on 'Remember Dr Goh Keng Swee'. Strangely, my heart was pounding as I read and later reflected on this titan's life. Instinctively, a question came to mind i.e. will there be another titan like Dr Goh, Mr Lee KY, Mr Wee Kim Wee or the other members of the Old Guard in my generation? Will I get to see one em...

Day 3 & 4 - Halong Bay

HALONG BAY Cat Ba Island (2 days, 1 night) After 1 day of exploration of Hanoi city, we headed for Halong Bay via the junkboat. Our destination was on Cat Ba Island where we stayed for the night. It was also there that we ventured onto 'Monkey' Island - not to be deceived; there was only 4 monkeys sighted. The exhilirating part of this journey was the motorbike ride to the ferry terminal to board the boat to 'Monkey' Island. Felt like I was part of a short scene of a James Bond movie (pillion with Pierce Brosnan!). Will never forget the cold draft blowing against my face and just riding up and down the slopes! Cat Ba Island is a very quiet & tranquail place. Little activity especially at night. Wanted to catch the morning activities at the fishing wharf opposite our hotel but could not wake up in time. Nonetheless, managed to capture some snippets of what goes on at the bay. Waiting patiently to board the boat. Snapped this on board the boat. Not a vietnamese but fe...
