At The Beginning

AT THE BEGINNING - Richard Marx & Donna Lewis

We were strangers starting out on a journey
Never dreaming what we'd have to go through
Now here we are and I'm suddenly standing
At the beginning with you

No one told me I was going to find you
Unexpected, what you did to my heart
When I lost hope, you were there to remind me
This is the start

And life is a road and I wanna keep going
Love is a river, I wanna keep flowing
Life is a road, now and forever, wonderful journey
I'll be there when the world stops turning
I'll be there when the storm is through
In the end, I wanna be standing
At the beginning with you
We were strangers on a crazy adventure
Never dreaming how our dreams would come true
Now here we stand, unafraid of the future
At the beginning with you

Knew there was somebody somewhere
Like a light in the dark
Now I know that dreams will live on
I've been waiting so long
Nothing's gonna tear us apart

This song has been playing in my head for almost 2 days. Finally I found it! Never realised that it was the theme song for 'Anastasia' until I googled it. Ha..because I'm no big fan of cartoons!!!!

On a serious note, I thought this song was quite apt in summing up my trip to the Philippines. Started out on this journey with a bunch of acquaintances from NIE (I so totally didn't know they existed until this trip) and in just a week, friendships blossomed. I never really believe in coincidences. Rather everything happens for a purpose and I know its not by chance that the 9 of us met and came together as Team Aspire. Coming home, we each have our own lives to lead but beyond a shadow of doubt, we will never be able to walk past each other now and not have things to say to one another. Its amazing if you ask me, for the team never really came together throughout the planning process. But look at where we are now. We have come far.

Likewise with the people I've met in GK and USLS, we were strangers to one another. Yet they lavished us with their love and hospitality as though we have been friends for the longest time ever. The 9 youths loved us with such simplicity; coming all the way to the airport and giving us what we enjoyed eating. It meant so much to me. They may not be rich in the material things but they are surely rich in their capacity to love and its a gift.

With this, I recall what Hidayah said 1 day during our morning walk in ERH : "You won't miss what you never had". How true. These kids grew up in a community where they have learnt to live with the basics, loving one another as themselves and sharing whatever little they had with others. No frills or fuss to life. Before I left, one of them gave me his only pair of sunglass and handphone strap as a parting gift. I was speechless. At a young age, they already realised that it is a greater blessing to give, regardless of the amount. As their older sister, I have much to learn from them.

This is just the beginning. God knows what will happen months and years down the road. As of now, I'm relishing in the many wonderful memories we have all played a part in creating.

A BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL, MY FRIENDS!

Wo(Man) of the hour

As I read the tribute to the late Dr Goh Keng Swee, I can't help but feel this profoundly deep admiration for this immensely brilliant forefather of Singapore. I was in awe of his contributions and how his influence is so pervasive in modern Singapore, yet so few actually heard and know of his legacy. The more I read on about what people remembered of him and his long list of accolades, the more proud I am to be a Singaporean. I never knew places of interests like our zoo, bird park and even Sentosa were his ideas! These are just a tiny fraction of his contributions. My gosh....it was just an incredible discovery and I was hooked to the Saturday's Special edition on 'Remember Dr Goh Keng Swee'. Strangely, my heart was pounding as I read and later reflected on this titan's life. Instinctively, a question came to mind i.e. will there be another titan like Dr Goh, Mr Lee KY, Mr Wee Kim Wee or the other members of the Old Guard in my generation? Will I get to see one em...

Day 3 & 4 - Halong Bay

HALONG BAY Cat Ba Island (2 days, 1 night) After 1 day of exploration of Hanoi city, we headed for Halong Bay via the junkboat. Our destination was on Cat Ba Island where we stayed for the night. It was also there that we ventured onto 'Monkey' Island - not to be deceived; there was only 4 monkeys sighted. The exhilirating part of this journey was the motorbike ride to the ferry terminal to board the boat to 'Monkey' Island. Felt like I was part of a short scene of a James Bond movie (pillion with Pierce Brosnan!). Will never forget the cold draft blowing against my face and just riding up and down the slopes! Cat Ba Island is a very quiet & tranquail place. Little activity especially at night. Wanted to catch the morning activities at the fishing wharf opposite our hotel but could not wake up in time. Nonetheless, managed to capture some snippets of what goes on at the bay. Waiting patiently to board the boat. Snapped this on board the boat. Not a vietnamese but fe...
