Show A Little Kindness

"A kind face is so disarming. In a world of high walls, fear, pride and ambitions, a kind smile dissolves many barriers. Kindness is not pretentious. It has no agenda. It is not the salesman’s ingratiating attempt to sell his product. It is a joy from our inner man conveyed in a gentle manner to those around us. While joy is a bubbly state of rejoicing directed toward God, the source, kindness is directed toward other people.

Kindness does not focus on itself but on others. It sees a discouraged face. It touches a tender spot in someone’s life. It always encourages, and in a gentle way, it offers renewed courage and strength.Kindness does not reproach but rather understands. It is like a soothing balm; it heals wounds, and it calms violence and anger.

Kindness emerges where bombastic proclamations, self-will and selfish demands stand no chance. Kindness melts the ice. It is like water that rises above a wall enabling us to sail over instead of frantically trying to knock down the wall. When kindness flows forth from a person, others relax. It is not confrontational but rather creates peace, even in tense situations. Kindness is like a train engine that pulls the wagons of joy and peace.

Our kindness enables others to recover their joy and experience peace instead of worry and concern."

Kindness seems so taken for granted these days. It's so sad to see how people are becoming more and more individualistic and acts of kindness are so fake now. One has to be taught how to be kind through campaigns, courtesy movements etc!!! Can you believe it???. Isn't this something that should be so natural? Sigh.....

I go on trains and witness how people can just blatantly ignore an elderly or preggie woman and continue doing their own things. Isn't it obvious that there are people who might just need the seats more than them? Sometimes, there' s this urge to just go up to some people and tell them off! Ha...but shall control and learn the art of doing it!!!

Seriously, what's the point of society becoming so advanced and developed but people are so hollow? No sense of compassion for the less fortunate, so fake and so Me, My , Mine!!! Sometimes when I go to less developed nations, I see a world of a difference in the locals and Singaporeans (and citizens of developed countries). The bliss of simplicity in the absence of luxuries is something we do not have the privilege to experience. I say it is a privilege because we have made life so complicated for ourselves that we have no chance to know what is true contentment and satisfaction. But for people in Myanmar, Philippines, Indonesia etc, they have so little yet they are so blissful and contented. Why? They are also more real towards others. Why??? :)

I am very grateful to be in Singapore. No qualms about that and I'm not wishing we will turn into slums one day so that we learn how to be appreciative of one another and the blessings we have. Why wait till we lose what's precious to us to learn how to appreciate them? We should be thankful everyday for everything we have (tough at times coz there are just things that irks us!) but hey...I feel Singaporeans do really have more than what we can ask for. And before we just grow fat and choke on our blessings, y not start learning to just GIVE and show a little kindness wherever and whenever possible.

Kindness does not call for anything extravagant, in fact its the simple things that matters most. Let's not lose ourselves in the pursuit of status, power and wealth but we must always remember to activate that 'kindness' button that I believe is in all of us. We are just one touch away from making someone else's day! Who knows!?

Wo(Man) of the hour

As I read the tribute to the late Dr Goh Keng Swee, I can't help but feel this profoundly deep admiration for this immensely brilliant forefather of Singapore. I was in awe of his contributions and how his influence is so pervasive in modern Singapore, yet so few actually heard and know of his legacy. The more I read on about what people remembered of him and his long list of accolades, the more proud I am to be a Singaporean. I never knew places of interests like our zoo, bird park and even Sentosa were his ideas! These are just a tiny fraction of his contributions. My gosh....it was just an incredible discovery and I was hooked to the Saturday's Special edition on 'Remember Dr Goh Keng Swee'. Strangely, my heart was pounding as I read and later reflected on this titan's life. Instinctively, a question came to mind i.e. will there be another titan like Dr Goh, Mr Lee KY, Mr Wee Kim Wee or the other members of the Old Guard in my generation? Will I get to see one em...

Universal Studio

Thanks to YOG I got to enter Universal Studios @ Resorts World Sentosa ytd for free! Yes...rides were free and I had a $10 food & beverage voucher. Ok....sometimes I'm grateful that I'm a teacher because we are really one of the few professions who will enjoy such privileges :) Introducing the bevy of gorgeous ladies of Pei Hwa Sec : Miss Grace Tan, Miss Sophia Tan, Miss Shirley Tan and Miss Roslinda ! Don't you love the donkey ears???!!! WE WERE SERIOUSLY AMUSING OURSELVES IN THE SOUVENIR SHOP! Alright...this is the first but not my last time visiting U.S.S because I'll be going there again in Nov for my dept's learning journey. Don't ask me how we are going to think up PE lessons from visiting the theme park but miracles do happen! So after loosening the leash around the 51 kids whom we accompanied yesterday evening, the 6 female teachers (where are all the men??? tsk tsk...) went about to have a wild time of feasting on 20" pizzas, running after cart...

SHAKING OFF THE DUST

Its been a long hiatus :) So many things have taken place and so many reflections to document but the inertia to do it was just to great to resist. Anyhow, decided to take some time during this break to start the 'blogging engine' going again. Hopefully, it revives my hope and wish to keep this site alive.  Just had the annual ODAC camp @ Ubin and while trekking around the island with the kiddies yesterday, I chanced upon this little grasshopper at the Sensory Trail. I managed to get up close and personal for this shot, which was taken with my new iPhone 7 ahem. Image was sharp and it looked great!  And the verse that came to mind was: "Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?....Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." - Matthew 6: 26-34 In my rest...
